Welcome to WinREG, the very latest Windows based utility for entering Baptism, Marriage and Burial information from church registers for the FreeREG project.
WinREG is the very latest Windows based utility recommended for entering Baptism, Marriage and Burial information from church registers for the FreeREG project.
The WinREG software was written by Thomas Horton. If you run into problems with the software get in touch with either your County Coordinator or the Webmaster.
This program was developed as a Windows based application to assist transcribers prepare their records for submission to FreeREG. It replaces the DOS based application SpeedREG which has been in use for a number of years. It is expected that users will find that WinREG is more compatable with their other experiences with running Windows applications. It also provides a modern platform that can be improved and augmented over time.

The file is quite large, approximately 1 Mbytes, so it may take a while to download if you have a slow speed connection.
Be patient the program is worth the time investment.
You will be asked to specify a folder (directory) on your hard disk in which to save the file.
(You may use any folder such as c:\received files\ or alternativly you may want to save it to a c:\winREG\ folder).
If installing on Microsoft Vista it is ESSENTIAL that you install the program in a folder such as c:\WinREG\ as the default option installs the program into a Windows protected folder and you may not be able to access your transcripts!!!!!
Just remember to make a note of the location. You will need to go to it later in the installation process.
The downloaded file will have a name like setup.exe or setup.zip (depending on the version of the software).
The installation process itself is similar to any other installation process under Windows and is quite self expanatory. However, you may want to briefly review the steps in the process that are explained below before starting the download.
Use Windows Explorer to go to the folder (directory) where you saved the install file setup.exe.
Double click on the file name and that will start the installation process and lead you through the installation process.
It is self explanitory and very fast!
As a first step, the installation process asks you to identify your, name, e-mail address and the syndicate or county
you are working with.
Please make sure this is the same information that you have used when you registered as a transcriber with FreeREG.
You may change this information at any point in the future by selecting the appropriate menu in WinREG.
The installation process then asks you to identify where the program is to be installed.
The default folder (directory) provided is c:\Program Files\Winreg, (and this is offered to you).
Just tap the Next button if you wish to use this location;
but you can define any directory on any drive that is accessible to your computer.
(Use the Browse button to locate the location you wish to use)
The process then aks you for the name for WinREG to be used in the Windows start menu.
If you are happy with the default name of WinREG simply click Next. You may use any name you wish.
Next, the process asks if you wish to create a shortcut on your desktop for ease of starting the program in the future.
This is highly recommended for the frequent user. To do so simply click the box and proceed to Next.
The process then summerizes the options that have been selected in the installation.
If you are happy with the options, simply click Next to complete the installation.
If you wish to make a change simply click the Back button to reach the option page where you wish to make a change.
The installation then finishes by asking if you wish to launch the program. If you want WinREG to start then click the launch WinREG button (it places a tick in the box) and then click Finish.
If you did not create an icon on the desktop then click the Windows Start button, go to All Programs,
highlight the WinREG folder where you will see the WinREG program. Click WinREG and away you go.
Alternatively you may use Windows Explorer to locate the program "WinREG.exe" in the folder that you stored it in
(see the preceeding section)e.g.the c:\Program Files\Winreg folder (directory).
Double click on the file name WinREG.exe and away you go.
